Halloween Stats Fright

A Spooky New Way to Review Stats Concepts

It's almost that time of year again. The leaves are changing color, the air is getting crisp, and students are getting excited for Halloween.

As teachers, we know that it can be tough to keep students engaged in learning during the week of Halloween (there are few things scarier than the day of a pep assembly or a student half day without a plan). That's why we're excited to share a new activity that will help your students review some concepts they have previously learned in a fun and engaging way.

Introducing "Halloween Stats Fright"

Halloween Stats Fright is a story-based activity that takes students on a spooky adventure through a haunted town. Along the way, they'll encounter a variety of Halloween characters who need help with their data analysis.

Activity: Halloween Stats Fright

Here are a few of the concepts that students will review as they complete this activity:

  • Finding the range of a dataset

  • Calculating the median and quartiles

  • Interpreting stem-and-leaf plots

  • Determining the mean of a dataset

  • Identifying skewed data

  • Calculating standard deviation and variance

  • Normal distribution calculations

  • Calculating z-scores

This activity is perfect for students to do some collaborative work and should not take them too long to complete.
